- Beginner: Purgatory is highly regarded for its beginner-friendly terrain. The resort features dedicated learning zones, including a free 45-minute beginner experience for first-timers (with lift ticket and rental purchase). There are long, gentle green runs like Divinity and Columbine off of Chair 4, and Mercy from the summit off Chair 6.
- Intermediate: A significant portion of the mountain is dedicated to intermediate skiers, with wide-open cruisers and picturesque views, like Paradise and Upper Hades on the front side. The backside, including Hermosa Park and Legends, offers more varied terrain with wooded sections.
- Advanced/Expert: Purgatory provides challenging terrain for experienced skiers, particularly on the upper reaches served by Lift 8 and Lift 3. Runs like Styx and Pandemonium offer steep pitches and moguls. The resort also boasts tree skiing and glades, with McCormick's Maze being a notable dense gladed area.
Terrain parks
Purgatory features multiple terrain parks, including a main park near Lift 1 with a halfpipe, jumps, and rails for various skill levels. Smaller parks are available near the base and backside.
Other unique features
- Tree Skiing: Abundant tree skiing options with fun "alleyways" and natural features.
- Powder: Known for consistent, dry powder from frequent storms, often followed by sunny, bluebird days.
- Affordability: Lift tickets are often below $100, and kids 12 and under ski free with a Power Kids Pass.
- Snowmaking: Covers key areas to ensure reliable conditions.
- Snowcat skiing: Guided trips into the backcountry offer access to untouched terrain for advanced skiers.
- Durango Hot Springs: Located nearby, it provides a perfect post-skiing relaxation spot with mineral-infused soaking pools.
